Episode: The Power of Campfires and Community: Entrepreneurial Lessons with Kevin Koym

Kevin Koym’s grandfather was a cotton farmer. Seven straight years, the crops failed. Seven years, the neighbors showed up. That is not a metaphor Kevin invented โ€” it is the foundation story of Tech Ranch, the entrepreneurial community he built in Austin that has now reached entrepreneurs in 22 countries.

Before Tech Ranch, Koym helped build the e-commerce engine behind Dell and worked at Steve Jobs’ startup NeXT โ€” where he learned that vision isn’t a strategy, it’s what keeps you moving when everything feels like it’s coming apart. What he took from both experiences is that founders need community as much as capital, and that loneliness is one of the underreported crises in entrepreneurship. Tech Ranch was his answer: a campfire, not a pitch room. Show up. Listen. Offer something useful. The business follows.

Kevin’s family has been rooted in Williamson County since 1846. The hill country ranch near Florence that inspired the Tech Ranch name still exists. He sees Round Rock not as Austin’s suburb but as its own potential entrepreneurial hub. He is currently focused on nervous system health, meditation, and the kind of stillness he argues every founder needs before they can lead well.

This region has deep roots. And with the right support, it can become a powerful hub for entrepreneurial growth. — Kevin Koym, Founder, Tech Ranch Austin

Start with five minutes of stillness. You can afford that. If you cannot lead yourself, you cannot lead a company. Take care of your nervous system first.
